Mains of Dhuloch

This public consultation relates to the proposed development of an egg production facility on land at Mains of Dhuloch, Kirkcolm, Stranraer. The development will comprise 2no poultry units (buildings) with roof mounted solar panels, 2 dung sheds, 26 chicken shelters and 8 feed silos, alterations to existing access, formation of 2 detention basins, landscaping and associated works.

The National Planning Framework 4 (NPF4) sets out that development proposals that contribute to the viability, sustainability, economy and diversity of rural communities will be supported.  This policy provided encouragement to rural economic activity, innovation and diversification whilst seeking to ensure that the distinctive character of the rural area, natural assets and cultural heritage are safeguarded and enhanced.

The Dumfries and Galloway Local Plan 2 (LDP2) supports business development and employment creation in the rural area, and seeks to protect good quality land for agricultural purposes.

The proposed development is a diversification of an existing agricultural use where agriculture is the predominant land use.  The nature of the development is such that free range hens require agricultural land to roam and forage and the proposed development is consistent in scale and design with the rural character of this area.
